Here you will find links that will take you on a trip through the past – through the history of Burning Man – from its early days on a small beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the bustling city of some 48,000+ people that the Burning Man event has become today. These people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one’s day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event.

There are no rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the playa. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience, and in fact, is such a part of the experience that Larry Harvey, founder of the Burning Man project, gives a theme to each year, to encourage a common bond to help tie each individual’s contribution together in a meaningful way. Participants are encouraged to find a way to help make the theme come alive, whether it is through a large-scale art installation, a theme camp, gifts brought to be given to other individuals, costumes, or any other medium that one comes up with.

he Burning Man project has grown from a small group of people gathering spontaneously to a community of over 48,000 people. It is impossible to truly understand the event as it is now without understanding how it has evolved. The impact of the Burning Man experience has been so profound that a culture has formed around it. This culture pushes the limits of Burning Man and has led to people banding together nation-wide, and putting on their own events, in attempt to rekindle that magic feeling that only being part of this community can provide. The Black Rock Arts Foundation promotes interactive art by supporting public art that exists outside the event, and has a special interest in supporting art at regional events. Additionally, Burning Man has over two thousand volunteers who work before, during and after the event (many who work year-round) to make the event a reality. It seems to be that there is celebrated in the summer solstice Sankt Hans (23-24 of juny) in Alesund, Norway.

On 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th of this month, one of the most keenly anticipated events will be taking place; the International Music Band Competition, which has been held for over 120 years. A total of 27 bands, 23 of which are competing and the other four appearing as guest acts, will be performing at the Opera House and Bullring.

From 2nd until 25th July, you have the chance to see live performances by Fangoria, La Excepción, Chambao, Bumbury, Joan Manel Serrat, Miguel Bosé & The Cabriolets, Amaral, Anastacia, Yan Tiersen and James Taylor. But there’s even more: following the success of last year, on 18th July, the biggest night of the Fair, known as the Gran Nit de Juliol, will be bringing you a wide variety of cultural acts and entertainment, whilst the city’s museums and art galleries will remain open from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with free entry.

Furthermore, on 11th July, the second Ballroom Dancing Competition will be taking place in the Plaza de la Virgen square, and on the last Sunday of the month, the traditional flower show, known as the ‘Batalla de Flores’ (literally flower battle) will fill the Paseo de la Alameda boulevard with light and colour. The hogueras are impressive giant papier-mâché figures set up all around the city and are the focal point of this celebration. These magnificent sculptures, which are constructed throughout the year, are made up of ninots, grotesque figures that express popular sentiment about topical issues.

All around Alicante the streets are festooned and barracas or stands are set up where revellers can have lunch, dinner and generally celebrate. The fronts of these stands, which end up being burned on the 24th, compete in beauty, art and colour, and prizes are awarded to the best.

From 20th to 24th June, mascletaes, festivities and bull fighting will be revolutionising the city of Alicante: on Saturday, 20th June, at midnight, the frantic activity of foguerers and barraquers will fill each neighbourhood when the statues are put up during the Plantà de les Fogueres. An evening of restrained emotion will lead into the activities planned for Sunday. On 21st and 22nd June, at around 8 p.m., the traditional Floral Offering will take place, finishing in the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás. Proceedings will be brought to a close on Sunday by the ‘queen’ of the celebrations the Bellesa Major Infantil, Cristina María Rodríguez and on Monday 22nd June by the Bellesa del Foc d’Alacant, Miriam Toré Navalón.

On Wednesday, the International Folklore Parade will fill the streets of Alicante with an extraordinary display of colour. Groups from all over Spain and around the world will be taking part. And finally, on 24th June, at midnight, a monumental white blaze of fireworks will be launched from the top of Mount Benacantil, marking the start of the Cremà, or burning, of thousands of hogueras and barracas.

There are several things Valencia is passionate about so much that they become an art form here. Spanish music, fireworks, ceramics, rice dishes… Flowers are definitely one of those. Locals sometimes call Valencia the city of music, light and flowers. Valencians decorate their city with flowers on every possible occasion, and they do amazing things with them. Flowers are offered to every patron saint on his day. But the Battle of the Flowers (Batalla de Las Flores) is the ultimate display of what the Valencians can do.

La Batalla de las Flores (Battle of the Flowers) is a celebration of summer and the final act of the Feria de Julio in Valencia. It starts with a long parade of enormous and gorgeous floats pulled by horses and filled with Valencians dressed to the theme of the float. The primary condition for all of the floats is that they involve artwork with flowers, and it is truly amazing – some look like they are totally made of flowers, and others actually are. Forget ikebana…

Once the floats have made a couple of cirlcles around the route and have been awarded prizes by the commission, the battle breaks out. The floats are filled with flower heads, and the spectators have been supplied too. The public and the float crews fight against each other to the last flower. It is a two-way orange shower. There are huge piles of flower-heads stocked for the battle and the fiesta staff bring the buckets to those who run out of ammunition. Even the mayor is called into battle.

After about 20 minutes the fire ceases and the heavy artillery finishes it off – the mascleta (fireworks).

The Fallas Concerts are financed by the City Council and are organized with the collaboration of two national radio stations. They are free of charge (by invitation only) and they take place on dates during the Fallas week. Performances are mainly by national artists and singers. The venue may vary so it is a good idea to consult the programme each year.

As Valencia is a land of music, it is logical that the Fallas Committees organize a large number of street parties, known as VERBENAS in each neighbourhood, where locals meet to dance and have a good time.

At these Fallas verbenas, everyone who wants to join in is given a warm welcome, so they are rcommendable for visitors, who are sure to find a friendly, laid-back atmosphere.

- The “Cabalgata del Ninot”: this is a parody parade where the participating Committees dress up to portray famous personalities or current events in a critical or satiric way, playing with double meanings, or even provocation. This parade takes no political sides and has no taboos: any institution, person or event currently in the public eye can become the subject of criticism. As a result, it is seen as a Falla on the move with its “human Ninots”.

- The “Cabalgata del Ninot Infantil”: this is the equivalent of the one above in the realm of children’s Fallas. Here, it is the children who make up the amusing, colourful, lively parades. Although its themes obviously don’t reach the same levels of mordacity as its elder namesake, this cavalcade also includes a fair dose of satire and humour, more suited to the public it is aimed at.

Falleras Mayores in Ninots Exhibition

At the exhibition you can admire the ninots, cardboard figures that accompany the monuments of the falleros, which have been selected from each of the Junta Central Fallera commissions, and which will be returned to their respective fallas for the celebration. These are true works of art, carefully done by fallero artists “Artista fallero” who worked on them during the year.

The public plays an important part in the exhibit, for their votes will decide which of the cardboard figures is to be indultado, or saved from the fire, and taken to the Museo Fallero, where it will be kept along with all the ninots indultats that since 1934 have been spared.

The exhibit inaugurates the Fallas season. Visit the exhibit showcasing the work of some of the best artists and place your vote!

Tent Ninots Exhibition

Each year Fallas is celebrated from March 15th to the 19th inclusive, when the city of Valencia receives some 700 large and small fallas, which are admired not only by Valencians, but also by thousands a visitors who travel to the city to see them. The festivities last till March 19th, the day of the creamà, when the enormous monuments are set alight and engulfed in the flames. The fire, the mascletàs or booming petards, the firework displays and the spirited crowds all contribute to making the festivity, declared a Festival of International Tourism Interest, and well-known worldwide, a most enjoyable experience.
